Per la prima volta, le opere di tre fotografi - René Burri (1933-2014), David Alan Harvey (1944) e Francesco Zizola (1962) - si riuniscono per Like A Samba.
Una raccolta di fotografie e che esprimono una sorta di nostalgia, come una canzone
d’amore, o la famosa saudade. Questa raccolta di immagini guarda le spiagge di Rio de Janeiro dall’esterno. Tre fotografi stranieri, uno svizzero, un americano, un italiano - ma tutti accomunati da un certo credo - hanno vissuto in questo ritmo per mesi, anni, decenni. E la loro Rio rimane sempre enigmatica. Come la ragazza di Ipanema a portata di mano, ma non del tutto...

Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at me.
Le venti fotografie e esposte presso la 10b Photography, co-curate da Deanna Richardson e Daniel Blochwitz, vanno dal 1950 no ad arrivare all’anno scorso e creano un racconto pieno di ritmo e di colori, proprio come il flusso e riflusso della vita di tutti i giorni in Brasile. Ma oltre la superficie color caramella delle spiagge e l’ottimismo del Tropical Modernismo, molte di queste foto alludono sottilmente alle realtà più dure e nascoste. Come un Samba, queste immagini sono belle e orecchiabili, proponendo un desiderio di vita disinibito che può apparire quasi esotico allo sguardo europeo. Eppure, i momenti raffigurati non sono stati catturati per i nostri occhi, ma scelti per mostrare la danza quotidiana in una lotta di cui anche la musica parla.

10b Photography in collaboration with ILEX Gallery For the first time, works from three photographers - René Burri (1933-2014), David Alan Harvey (1944) and Francesco Zizola (1962) - come together for Like a Samba. A collection of photographs which express a sort of longing, a sort of love song, a sort of saudade. This collection of images looks at the beaches of Rio de Janeiro from the outside. Three foreigners, yes, a Swiss, an American, an Italian - but all three with a certain creed - have walked this beat for months, years and decades. And their Rio remains enigmatic. - like the Girl from Ipanema, within reach, but not quite.

The twenty images on show at ILEX Gallery in Rome, co-curated by Deanna Richardson and Daniel Blochwitz, range from the 1950’s through last year, and are filled with the rhythm and colors, the visual spectacles and the mundane, as well as the ebb and flow of everyday life in Brazil. In fact, there are allusions in many of these pictures that point to harsher realities underneath the candy-colored surfaces of beach culture or the optimism of Tropical Modernism. Like a samba, these pictures are catchy and beautiful, proposing an uninhibited lust for life that may seems exotic to a European gaze. Yet, the scenes depicted were not performed for our eyes, but rather capture the daily dance of struggle for which the music also speaks…..
